Level 2 Award in MOT Testing

MOT Tester Qualification

The new Institute of the Motor Industry MOT Nominated Tester qualification replaced the DVSA course in May 2016. Upskill your mechanics and increase your testing capacity.

The course

From May 2016 in order to become an MOT Nominated Tester (NT) you will need to achieve the new Award in MOT Testing Qualification which replaced the Nominated Tester Training (NTT) course previously delivered by the DVSA.

This qualification is primarily developed for those individuals who wish to enhance their career by qualifying as an MOT Tester. Achievement of this qualification enables them to apply to undertake the DVSA final observed assessment in order to achieve their Certificate of Competence (CoC), enabling them to become a Nominated Tester.

When you apply for the Award in MOT Testing Qualification course through an Approved Awarding Organisation Centre such as Mantra Learning, you will still need to show that you meet the qualifying criteria to become a Nominated Tester which includes:

  • have a current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle classes they want to test
  • be a skilled mechanic with at least 4 years full-time employment in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested. (Apprentices who have been employed for 4 years are eligible.)
  • have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • be ‘of good repute’
  • and to become a nominated tester (NT) for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 vehicles they must also have an ‘appropriate’ qualification.
  • finally, you will then need to complete a VT8 (Demonstration Test) which will be observed by DVSA. This can now be achieved at your Vehicle Testing Station or at a training provider centre.

Once you have achieved both the MOT Qualification and the VT8 (Demonstration Test), you will then be able to carry out MOTs at a Vehicle Testing Station.

Course content

The content of the qualification includes:

  • working safely within a vehicle test centre
  • communicating with colleagues and customers
  • how to manage and maintain their CPD
  • carrying out pre-test checks
  • carrying out an MOT test

Assessment

These qualifications are subject to externally set and externally marked assessment in the form of online tests delivered through the IMI online testing platform.

IMI has developed a bank of questions that will be randomly selected to cover the knowledge requirements of the qualification. This test will consist of 40 questions, to be answered in 75 minutes and will span the breadth of the content for each of the units.

In addition to the externally set and externally marked online tests, learners must successfully undertake practical assessments provided by IMI.
