Job Gym - Skills for Life
The Job Gym at Mantra Skills helps you improve your essential
skills and give you the best chances of getting a good job. The Job
Gym incorporates:
- Conveniently located centres
- On the job learning
- Industry specialist instructors
- A drop-in centre with a computer suite and expert staff on hand
to assist
- Learndirect centre
The Job Gym provides government funded coaching to help you
improve your literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. These are the
skills you use in your everyday working life, such as reading,
writing and maths. They can also help you boost your CV to get a
good job or to move on to further study.
Learning at your own pace you will be coached by one of our
Skills for Life tutors in a way that is applicable to everyday use
in the sectors we serve - logistics and transport.

Who can join the Job Gym?
You can join the Skills for Life programme at the Job Gym if
you:
- Are over 19 years of age
- Have left compulsory full-time education
- Do not already hold a Literacy or Numeracy qualification at
level 2
Skills for Life - what's it all about?
Skills for Life qualifications are based on national standards
so potential employers can see what you're capable of. They
will:
- Give you more confidence in your own abilities
- Give you nationally recognised qualifications
- Help you get on at work
- Boost your CV
- Help you get onto other courses such as Apprenticeships
Study at a level to suit you
At the Job Gym, you will learn in one of our centres or at home
or a combination of both. You visit the centre to work on your
course as often as you like and you can study at a pace to suit
you. Skills for Life courses Skills for Life Certificates are
available in adult literacy and numeracy at three levels:
- Entry Level 3
- Level 1 (equivalent to GCSE D grade)
- Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE A-C grade)
The level you aim for and amount of coaching you get depends on
the level of skills you already have. We will give you an online
assessment to see which level would be right.
Employability Skills courses
If you are looking for a new job then we can offer a range of
courses in employability skills. This training will help you
understand the key qualities that employers are looking for such as
good timekeeping and being able to work well in a team. You will
also learn job seeking techniques such as how to look for work and
apply for jobs, as well as writing your CV and preparing for and
performing well in job interviews.
BTEC Awards in employability skills include:
- Work skills - searching and applying for jobs, CV writing,
interview techniques etc.
- Life skills - managing your money, working as a team,
investigating your rights and responsibilities
- Everyday IT - beginners courses in IT (using applications,
emails and the internet)
Information Technology courses
The ITQ Level 2 certificate shows that you have reached a
nationally recognised standard in IT working with applications such
as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. You choose which skills
you need to develop to help you in your own particular job and then
follow a tailor-made programme that meets your individual needs.
Any previous IT qualifications or experience you may already have
will count towards an ITQ award.
