The key purpose of this qualification is to create effective and
stimulating opportunities for learning through high quality
teaching
The programme
The starting point for anyone new to teaching in the post 16
sector is the Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning
Sector (PTLLS). This award comprises one 6-credit (QCF) unit.
The Level 3 BTEC Award in PTLLS is designed by Lifelong Learning
UK, the Sector Skills Council for the Learning and Skills Sector,
to reflect the professional standards required of teachers.

This qualification provides a basic minimum standard for all
those entering the profession of teaching in the lifelong learning
sector.
Outcomes
- PTLLS will gave staff the knowledge and skills to deliver high
quality teaching sessions and to develop appropriate teaching
resources to support learning
- All teachers in the Learning and Skills Sector need to be
working towards Qualified Teacher (QTLLS) status within 5 years of
which PTLLS is the first stage
- On completion the teacher can become registered with the
Institute for Learning (IFL) the professional body for
practitioners
Funding
Part or full Government funding is usually available for the
programme. Employers should also support learners by providing time
for study.
Programme delivery
All Mantra Learning Training Advisors are industry professionals
who are specialists in the area in which they teach. They are also
qualified to the highest standard in the life long learning sector
(PTLLS) and are members of the Institute for Learning.
Programme design
PTLLS is a 60-hour qualification consisting of a single unit.
This qualification covers the five core outcomes:
1. Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of
role in relation to teaching.
2. Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches
in the specialist area.
3. Demonstrate session planning skills.
4. Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which
motivate learners.
5. Understand the use of different assessment methods and
the need for record keeping.
Assessment
Assessment is by completion of 2 written assignments and by the
delivery of a 15 minute 'micro teach' observed session.
Opportunities for further development
For those who wish to progress, the next stage is to gain the
Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) which
is three units, one being PTLLS and then finally the Diploma to
Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) which is another
three units. On completion of DTLLS the learner will have
gained Qualified Teacher Status (QTLLS).
