Advanced Apprenticeships

Equal to 2 good ‘A' levels, the Advanced Apprenticeship is usually the natural progression from an Apprenticeship but occasionally a learner may be assessed as suitable for the Advanced level straight away. Like an Apprenticeship, it is made up of various parts depending on the subject area, but generally it includes:

  • An NVQ level 3
  • A number of key at level 2and above
  • A technical certificate
  • A number of additional NVQ units
  • Learning additional skills, techniques or knowledge to enhance a person's career

We identify areas needing improvement, carry out teaching & training to support the learner and then reassess to confirm the level now reached. (Click here for more detail on NVQ's Key Skills: for an Advanced Apprenticeship these are usually set at level 2, however some subjects require a higher level dependent on the technical nature of the subject and the learner's job role. These are usually in subjects such as practical numeracy, communication (written/spoken English & team working) and IT.

Prior achievement will be taken into consideration when deciding which key skills and at which level to include in the Advanced Apprenticeship.

Technical Certificate Level 3: Technical certificates are a vocationally related qualification that provides underpinning knowledge relating to the subject area – they are delivered through a taught programme of off the job training. Funding: In most cases Advanced Apprenticeships for 16-24 year olds are fully funded through the Learning & Skills Council.
