24 September 2014
The 24th September saw the culmination of the collaboration between Mantra Learning, Redwood School and Manchester Communication Academy with the Greenpower Challenge race day at Aintree Motor Racing Circuit.
Redwood & MCA both entered a car in the IET Formula 24 category (11-16yr olds), with technical and mechanical support from Mantra’s Motor Vehicle team.
The Greenpower Challenge is an electric car challenge where students build an electric car and compete in a 90 minute endurance race. Races take place throughout the year at various motor racing circuits around the UK such as; Renishaw Castle Combe, Goodwood, Rokingham & Nutts Corner as well as Aintree and several more.
Mantra held a practice day on the 19th September to allow the drivers to hone their skills and put the cars through their paces. The day also allowed for any technical issues to be ironed out and modifications to be made before race day.
Race day started with heavy rain which fortunately passed and the sun came out before the practice session. There were two races on the day for the F24 category and both teams put in a good effort in the first race and finished in 34th (MCA) and 36th (Redwood) places out of 38 competitors. Following a discussion about tactics and a change of batteries, it was time for the second race. Both teams began to perform much better with MCA finishing 22nd and Redwood 33rd . Considering this was the first event for both teams, it turned out to be a great success with everyone who took part really enjoying the day and enthusiastically talking about what is needed to be done to win next year.
Next year, our ambition is to support ten Greater Manchester schools to help them enter the race.
Practice sessions will be held on Mantra Learning’s race track.
We’re also looking for businesses to sponsor next year’s teams—if interested, please contact us on 0161 653 5767 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
