Why be an apprentice?
A different way to learn, where you will earn money, gain skills and fulfill your potential.
Things you need to know
An apprenticeship requires you to work towards a nationally recognised qualification all whilst earning money all at the same time.
• work alongside experienced staff
• be trained in the skills employers want
• earn a wage and get holiday pay
• be given time for study related to their role
The national minimum wage (NMW) for apprentices aged under 19 is £3.90 per hour from April 2019. The apprentice NMW also applies to apprentices aged 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship.
All apprenticeships include elements of on the job and off the job training, leading to industry recognised standards or qualifications. Some apprenticeships also require an assessment at the end of the programme to assess the apprentice's ability and competence in their job role.
The NUS Apprentice extra discount card provides apprentices with discounts from more than 140 top high street and online retail partners including Amazon, PizzaExpress, Jack Wills, 16-25 Railcard, The Co-op and more!

Apprentices starting out on their new career can take advantage of two great travel offers from Transport for Greater Manchester.
For those in the first six months of their apprenticeship there is the offer of a free 28-day travel pass and then reduced price travel tickets for three more 28-day periods. It is valid on bus or Metrolink services across the region. The ticket can be used on all Metrolink trams and most bus services within Greater Manchester; including those run by Stagecoach, First and Arriva.
Alternatively, the ‘Apprentice Bike to Work’ scheme offers a free bike, cycle training and bike maintenance courses. The bikes also come with cycling accessories and safety equipment and can be applied for anytime in the first year of the apprenticeship.
