Chris Clarkson MP Visits Mantra ahead of "100 HGV Drivers in 100 Days" Campaign

Friday 30th May saw Mantra Learning welcome Chris Clarkson MP for Middleton and Heywood, to our Middleton site. The visit may prove pivotal in our challenge to address the UK’s looming HGV Driver crisis.

The Logistics Skills Network estimates that over the last year the LGV driver shortage has grown to over 100,000 and as the economy recovers from the pandemic this lack of drivers is starting to impact on the ability of the UK haulage sector to keep the economy moving. With the increasing likelihood of empty supermarket shelves, the Network believes this issue needs to be addressed now.

Mantra, with support from Veterans Into Logistics, The Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Rochdale Borough Council and Jobcentre Plus has launched our “100 HGV Drivers in 100 Days” campaign in an effort to address the shortage and limit the impact that this crisis will have on businesses across the city region and the UK as a whole. As demand for goods increases, so does the need for drivers to transport those goods and the strain on logistics companies is already beginning to show.

Our campaign aims to take both job seekers and service-leavers and fast track them into becoming licensed LGV drivers through our fully funded course.

In Friday’s visit MP Chris Clarkson sat down with Mantra to hear the challenges we face and how we can work with the Government to solve this crisis both regionally and nationally.

Chris Clarkson, (who was elected MP for Middleton and Heywood in 2019) was also given a full tour of our state-of-the-art facilities, including our working logistics training centre housing our LGV simulator where residents will train to become key workers. After the tour was over, Chris took a moment to sit in the cab of one of our LGV training vehicles.
