Who can repair your car and what are the risks with an MOT extension?

Who can repair my car now the dealerships are shut?

The motor vehicle industry is no exemption to following current government guidelines on social distancing; however, there are garages who are key workers, as they provide services to other key workers such as NHS staff and transport services to keep our nation going.

If you usually take your car to a franchised dealership for your service and repairs, and their doors are shut due to the coronavirus crisis, you can still get essential work carried out by an independent garage, as long as they use manufactured approved parts and follow the manufacturer's service schedule correctly. Full details on this can be read on the European Automobile Manufacturers Association website

What are the risks to the MOT extension?

Over the last few weeks, the government has made changes to legislations to support motorists such as the MOT extension temporary measure and relaxation to drivers hours.

What you need to know

Your car, motorcycle, light van or other light vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be automatically extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after Monday 30 March 2020.

These temporary measures are to support individuals and businesses in the fight against COVID-19, but health & safety should still be a priority for drivers and the guidance on the MOT extension informs motorists, that vehicles should be "roadworthy" regardless of the extension and it is the vehicle owners responsibility to ensure these standards are met; tyres, brakes and lights are the top three defects for MOT failures.
