‘100 Driver in 100 Days’ Campaign
Britain’s driver shortage is becoming a crisis for the UK economy, with the LGV driver shortage approaching 100,000. This figure has almost doubled since February 2020.
3 key issues that could make the shortage worse are:
- Backlash of the DVLA suspending driving tests. The DVLA has provided an average of 72,655 LGV tests per annum over the past 5 years, resulting in an average of some 41,730 new drivers each year. However, in the last full year (April 2020 to March 2021) only 27,006 LGV tests were delivered by DVSA resulting in just 15,547 new drivers. The shortfall amounted to a loss of 45,649 LGV tests and 26,183 fewer new drivers.
- Brexit could aggravate this shortage even further. In Q2 2020 the number of EU HGV drivers working in the UK fell by 14,275 (36.3%), and there was a drop of 4,000 (1.5%) in UK nationals who are HGV drivers
- Driver retirement figures will keep increasing. The logistics sector is known for its aging workforce, with 64% of LGV drivers in the UK aged over 45.
Mantra Learning, The Job Gym and The National Logistics Academy aim to support the UK driver shortage through their ‘100 Drivers in 100 Days’ Campaign. We aim to increase the number of drivers, who are needed to move essential and every-day goods throughout the UK. By the end of July, drivers who join our programme will be fast-tracked, fully skilled and ready for employment with a fully funded LGV Licence.
