The logistics industry is thriving, a recent ONS study revealed that despite Covid and Brexit woes, the sector has grown 21% since 2019. These results indicate that transport and logistics is the UK’s fastest growing sector, expanding faster than any other industry, including retail, manufacturing, and construction. 

A response to Britain’s driver shortage saw the government announce fully funded training, increased wages, and better working conditions. The result has seen the number of HGV driving tests reach record levels. March 2022 figures show 10,481 tests with 6,307 passes, where pre-Covid era of March 2017 saw just 7,323 tests with 4,268 passes recorded. 

These reports show the impact that Government policy and funding can have on the industry. It is no longer seen as low paid work – HGV drivers are getting the respect and rewards they deserve. 

The Department for Transport has launched a call for evidence on a range of options to help more people access well-paid jobs in haulage. Last year, Mantra Learning launched the “Missing Drivers” campaign to find out why they are no longer driving and what it would take to persuade drivers to get back on the road.
