Skills Bootcamp Announced
The Governments first intensive short courses in HGV driving gets under way to help tackle skills shortages, supporting up to 11,000 people become qualified HGV drivers.
Today, the Government announced the launch of it's Skills Bootcamp to address the urgent need for HGV drivers. The initiative sees an investment of £34 million to help train new drivers, as well as existing HGV drivers who have left the industry, to get back on the road.
Through The National Logistics Academy, people that successfully complete the HGV courses will be guaranteed a job interview for one of our 3400 employer vacancies across all regions of the country. The first new drivers are expected to be on the road from March 2022.
Through the Academy network, courses are available in locations across the country and will also support existing drivers to refresh or upgrade their skills so they can to get back on the road.
Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said:
"HGV drivers are vital to keeping this country moving. It’s brilliant to see the first people with their hands on the steering wheel as they head towards new well-paid careers in the industry."
Skills Bootcamps are completely free for drivers wanting a career change or wanting to get back behind the wheel of a truck. Offering flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, Skills Bootcamps give people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with a local employer.
