Women in Logistics
Women in Logistics
The transport and logistics workforce are one of the largest and most vital in the UK, with over 1 million employees. However, the industry is still behind in terms of diversity, with only 20% of the workforce being female. The figure for women in land transport sits at 14%, while only 1% of truck drivers are women.
Industry Perceptions
The industry is heavily associated with heavy manual labour, which is why it has been traditionally thought of as a masculine sector. However, the digital transformation has changed our industry in more than one way and more and more intensive labour-oriented processes are now being done with just a few clicks. The introduction of robotics and automation has done away with the need for ‘manpower’ and has paved the way for greater participation by women. These days we often see women in the role of forklift and equipment operators, warehouse managers, shift supervisors and myriad other positions.
Female Experiences
We caught up with 3 leading females in the industry: Sami Bowler, Jenny Tipping and Keely Hadfield.
Sami who recently competed at Silverstone, expressed that ‘Women should have the confidence to have career progression the industry, even if it’s just through professional development.’
‘The majority of people in the industry are willing to help, and it is fine to ask for help if you’re asking to learn and become the best you can.’ – Jenny Tipping, who as well as working in the industry also develops online courses for people working in male dominated and helps them develop skills to make those industry more diverse.
Keely Hadfield, a Forklift instructor who came second in last years Talent in Logistics competition said that ‘If a man can do it, a women can do it.’
Very soon Mantra will be hosting an online event that aims to celebrate women in logistics and promote the industry to women as a career of first choice. More information coming soon.
