The UK’s driver shortage has thrown its supermarket supply line into chaos.

Reports from Good Morning Britain suggest that the UK lorry driver shortage has hit ‘catastrophic levels’ and implications of this are leading to food shortages in supermarkets. Food wholesalers are experiencing severe difficulties delivering to stores, pubs, restaurants, and care homes. Key issues effecting the shortage are Brexit, COVID-19 implications and IR35 tax changes. Find out about the key reasons for Britain’s driver shortage here.

Food industry leaders say they were accused of ‘crying wolf’ by the minister for transport during a crisis to discuss driver shortages. Now, wholesalers want army trucks to deliver the goods, as the effects are becoming increasingly prominent. Chief executive of the Federation of Wholesale Distributors (FWD) James Bielby said the situation had become so extreme, with the shortage hitting 70,000, he recommended the government having army trucks on standby “to ensure… enough vehicles and drivers to distribute food.”

If the shortage worsens, businesses will have to re-evaluate their entire supply chain. The impact will also affect consumers. The lack of shelf availability will naturally decrease, and limited supply would likely impact price inflation. Volume caps on products may be reintroduced, like the shortage seen during the peaks of the pandemic.

The national lorry driver shortage also has potential to disrupt waste collections around the UK. This is warned by Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP). SWP Managing Director Mickey Green said: “This is a major national issue that hits Somerset especially hard.”

Mantra Learning, The Job Gym and The National Logistics Academy aim to support the UK driver shortage through their ‘100 HGV Drivers in 100 Days’ Campaign. We aim to increase the number of drivers, who are needed to move essential and every-day goods throughout the UK. Drivers who join our programme will be fast-tracked, fully skilled and ready for employment with a fully funded HGV/LGV Licence.
