Why do lorry drivers measure way above the national averages for depression?

Mental Health and Lorry Drivers.

A 2017 systemic review by Transport Research Laboratory highlighted a bi-directional link between driving and mental health; driving affects mental health and mental health affects driving.

According to Mind Mental Health Charity, 3% of the UK population are currently diagnosed with depression, but in studies of lorry driving in the USA, Brazil and Australia, respondents measured way above their respective national averages for depression.

Core components can be seen to feed into the possible reasons for the number of HGV drivers in the community suffering with mental health problems.

Life on the road.

Firstly, lets take a look at some of the elements that drivers may be impacted by whilst living a life on the road.

  • Lack of choice about how perform in their role
  • Time pressure
  • Isolation
  • Other road users

Gender Roles and Labels.

HGV drivers are mostly male and the logistics sector itself is 95% male. The average age of HGV driver in the UK is 48. What does this mean when it comes to mental health? Gender stereotypes depict the believe that men should be ‘strong’ and this leads to a default of some men bottling up their emotions.
