Case Study
When Georgina Mellor signed up for a Driving Goods Vehicles Apprenticeship, she also benefitted from training for LGV licence acquisition.
Georgina, 19, only passed her driving test twelve months ago but was particularly keen to gain an LGV licence.
Georgina works part-time at Malcolm Clark Steel and can see a number of benefits from doing a DGV apprenticeship and learning to drive an LGV.
Not only will it expand her career options, it also enables her to drive a horsebox - essential for somebody one day hoping to own her own horsebox company.
‘Doing the apprenticeship has definitely helped with learning to drive a C Class.’
‘The resources, the visits, preparing for tests - the apprenticeship has taught me everything I needed to know about driving.’
Georgina was initially nervous about learning to drive an LGV.
‘I wasn’t that confident when starting out but I knew that an LGV licence would be a useful thing to acquire.’
‘I thought driving an LGV would be harder than it actually turned out to be, I adjusted quite quickly to driving.’
‘The tests - theory and practical - were very different.’
‘In fact, the whole learning process has been completely different to learning to drive a car.’
Even though Georgina passed her test first time and has acquired her licence, she still wants to continue learning about driving.
‘I want to continue to learn about the truck and about the loading process.’
‘That’s one thing I’ve learnt, driving is totally different depending on whatever it is that you’re driving!’
Georgina has only had a car driving licence for a year so the Driving Goods Vehicles apprenticeship helped to build up her confidence and experience.
‘I found some parts of the learning process difficult, plus I’m a bit of a perfectionist.’
‘Learning to handle the difference in gearboxes for instance, it’s taken some getting used to changing gear, also getting used to reversing.’
‘The best part was the support I got from my Mantra driving instructor.’
‘My instructor helped me to move on from things I was struggling with and his support was key in building my self-belief.’
