Richard Ruane, BC Transport
Traffic Office Apprenticeship"Working and learning hands on at the same is great for me, university is very academic and has its place but doing theory and practical with Mantra Learning is like hybrid and you’re able to learn on the job. In transport I feel it works better so you can gain live experience.”
Case Study
BC Transport are a founder member of a nationwide network of hauliers offering a palletised goods delivery service - Palletforce, handling anything from a one pallet delivery to a full load consignment.
Richard saw a Traffic Office vacancy advertised at BC Transport so he got in touch with the owner Chris Goodwin. They agreed Richard could work part time until he completed his A-levels., following which Richard then started his Level 2 Apprenticeship.
Richard worked in every department in the company to get an understanding of the business. In his second year Richard met his target of achieving 100% performance levels month after month.

Doing the level 2 and 3 Traffic Office programme has opened my eyes to difference experiences through the work I’ve done. You get an understanding of the job which has an adverse effect down the line.”
Richards thinks apprenticeships are great, growing people in a company is the right way so you can teach them how your company works, rather than having a prejudiced view from a classroom.
ROI
KPI’s were set for Richard which enabled him to make a project his own - which was to manage the trunking area.
“We now get revenue back that we didn’t previously have and we are getting less and less complaints or fines so we’re saving immediately.
I created a new revenue stream between us and the depots where we get money back from those that under perform within the network. In addition, we are gaining profit on each delivery with approxmately 1,000 deliveries per week. In September we gained nearly £1,500 from just this revenue stream and it’s providing us profit month on month.”
